FAQs
Do I need to have Articulate Storyline for this course?
You will definitely need it for the Storyline courses but not for the Instructional Design workshops.
Is this only for beginners?
Each course states what level it is ideal for. Some of our intermediate courses may still suit advanced users looking for new ideas.
Are your qualifications accredited?
No, unfortunately we currently find the restrictions of formal accreditation too limiting to be able to provide the realistic, business focussed, rapid elearning type of instructional design course that we feel is needed.
Do I have to take all the courses?
No, that's the great thing about our new design. It allows you to pick and mix which topics you need to upskill. We have offered a discount for those wanting to take a series of courses. Use the discount code MULTI for a 10% discount on any bundle of items over $400.
What if I have trouble fitting this around my work commitments?
These courses are designed to fit in a long lunchtime and the only homework is some practice we might suggest trying at home.
What format does the course take?
All our courses are run virtually in Zoom. There is a mix of sharing examples and doing activities with the group. Our Instructional Design workshops separate into breakout rooms to do ID practice activities. Our Storyline examples ask you to try a small snippet of what we have just showed you.
Who are the instructors?
Your principle instructor is Jacinta Penn who has been working in elearning for 8 years. She is the chief Instructional Designer for Workbright and has worked with both large and small clients in multiple formats. She has a Grad Dip in Career Development, Diploma in HR & management and a Certificate in Elearning.
What is the difference between your course and the NZQA courses available on Educational Technology or Adult Learning?
Our course is specifically designed to teach you how to use Instructional Design to develop elearning for businesses, rather than for educational institutions. The difference is significant in practice even though many of the same theories are used. Our course is highly practical in showing you how to apply these in real life. Those courses are useful but sometimes hard to apply in our context.
Do you teach graphic design?
Ah, you found my achilles heel. Don't tell anyone but I am not that good at graphic design. I use skilled graphic designers to help me with my visuals. We recommend Sally Cox's LinkedIn.com course https://www.linkedin.com/learning/elearning-techniques-visual-design/.
Where does your content come from?
Jacinta has worked in elearning for over 8 years. When she first started she was literally putting powerpoints online (oh the shame!). Through online blogs of people like Cathy Moore, Tom Kuhlman and David Anderson who runs the Articulate community, she began to understand there was a lot more to good learning than just the content. They then led her to others and so on, until she accumulated enough knowledge that she started to share it with others too. She became frustrated that there weren't qualifications available in this topic, aware that poor elearning can put managers off entirely and aware there is a lack of good instructional designers to be found. She volunteered with NZATD and helped forming their learning competencies and then came up with a way to combine all this learning to match those competencies. The content in this course comes from her practical experience, everything she learnt from others and many of the actual articles that have helped her plus articles on the theories and models that underpin them.
Why don't I just google it?
Absolutely, go for it. We strongly recommend that whether you do our course or not. We suggest our course as further applied learning. The difference with our course is that we work you through a case study so you can see how the theory applies, and then we get you to apply it yourself and coach you through those steps. Also it took Jacinta years to accumulate this knowledge so the course is a bit of a shortcut, reducing 2 years of learning down to a series of lunchtimes.
What theory are you basing your course on?
We touch on several theories in our course without going into them too deeply, including Knowles Andragogy, Bloom's Taxonomy, Gagne's Principles of Learning, Gamification, Spaced Learning and the Forgetting Curve, and Social Learning. We also look at Cathy Moore's Action Mapping in much more detail.
We don't have a credit card for payment
No problem. We can organise an invoice for you, as long as it is paid before the course start. Simply send us the name and email addresses of the people you want to enrol with a purchase order number/reference.
